Salary

Salary is a fixed regular payment for an employee. It is usually agreed as an annual amount in the employment contract and paid in equal instalments, often monthly. The stated figure is the gross salary (before deductions); the amount actually received is the net pay (after deductions). Unlike hourly wages, it does not change with hours worked unless the contract says otherwise.

Simple illustration
A contract states a gross annual salary. Payroll spreads it evenly across each pay period and applies PAYE deductions, so the employee receives a lower net amount on the payslip.
In the UK, salary is processed through payroll using PAYE. Employers calculate and withhold Income Tax and National Insurance, and may also deduct pension contributions, student loans or other agreed items. Benefits, allowances or salary sacrifice can change what counts as taxable pay and the final take‑home pay.
What a standard UK payslip typically includes:
- Employee and employer details
- Pay period and payment date
- Gross pay for the period (and year‑to‑date)
- Deductions: Income Tax, National Insurance, pension, student loan, others
- Net pay (take‑home pay)
