Tax return

Tax return in the UK is a report you send to HMRC (the UK tax authority) with your business income, allowable costs and other details. It tells HMRC how much tax you owe or whether you should get a refund.
Small businesses meet this in different forms. Sole traders and partners use Self Assessment, limited companies file a Company Tax Return, and VAT‑registered businesses complete a VAT Return. Most returns are filed online, either by you or by your accountant.
Main UK tax return types you may meet:
- Self Assessment tax return: for individuals such as sole traders and partners. Reports your business income and allowable expenses, plus other personal income.
- Company Tax Return (CT600): for limited companies. Reports profits and tax adjustments, usually with accounts and computations.
- VAT Return: for VAT‑registered businesses. Reports VAT on your sales and the VAT you can reclaim on purchases.
